What is Precision CNC Turning

Precision CNC Turning, short for Precision Computer Numerical Control Turning, is a high-precision subtractive metalworking manufacturing process carried out on CNC lathes (turning centers). It uses pre-programmed digital G-code instructions to automatically control machine movements. The workpiece raw bar stock spins at a controlled spindle speed, while fixed rotating cutting tools feed along horizontal and vertical axes to remove excess material layer by layer. Unlike conventional manual lathe work, it achieves ultra-tight dimensional tolerances, ultra-smooth surface finishes and consistent roundness for all rotary symmetrical parts.

01. Complete Working Flow

STEP 01

CAD Digital Design

Designers draw rotary part models with CAD software, including dimensions, threads, grooves, chamfers and sealing shoulders.

STEP 02

CAM Programming

CAM software converts 3D models into G-code programs, setting precise spindle speed, cutting feed rate, depth and tool travel paths.

STEP 03

Machine Setup

Operators clamp solid blanks onto chucks or collets, install dedicated turning tools, calibrate origins and upload the program.

STEP 04

Auto Turning

The spindle rotates the blank while tools move along X and Z axes to machine diameters, bores, threads and grooves in one clamping.

STEP 05

Inspection & Finishing

Workpieces are measured by micrometers or CMM. Deburring, polishing and anti-corrosion surface treatments are conducted afterwards.
